I want to standardize my underwear drawer as I'm tired of matching socks. Price is no object here really - I just want the best underwear money can buy.

Patagonia Silk Weight Boxers

These feel like silk, but are machine washable. One key feature is they are quick-drying. If you've ever had to wash cotton underwear in a hotel sink and waited for them to dry, you'll appreciate these. They're expensive, but they're all I buy now. Glenn

I second these. Love them, last forever. Used tighty-whiteys way too long...

Smartwool socks. Without a doubt. Wool for comfort (they do NOT itch), nylon to last. super-popular with hikers.

Boxer briefs: ex-officio. Expensive but will last forever as made out of nylon. 2nd choice would be terramar: a softer feel and different fit; try one of each then pick your favorite.

I own and use all of these. Started getting them for comfort and pack-ability on 14hr flights to Asia and now slowly converting all my regular wear too.

I second the Smartwool socks.

I tried ex-officio boxers, but they didn't hold up as well as Patagonia. I wasn't aware of Terramar, but after seeing the price difference, I'll definitely try them.

The weak spot in most of the boxers I've tried is the life of the elastic waist band. The early version of the Patagonia briefs was weak there, but they've since beefed up the band.

I used to fold all our underwear neatly. Then I realized that it's a waste of time. Now I just stack all the underwear flat in a neat stack. I lift up the underwear and put the freshly washed stuff on the bottom. Or I have two stacks, I put freshly washed underwear on one stack and take underwear from the second stack. When the second stack is depleted, I flip the first stack over into the second stack's place. This way all the underwear gets equal wear.

As far as socks are concerned, the brand doesn't matter as long as you buy socks that are all the same. If you are having trouble telling black socks from dark blue ones, either sort them outside in the sunshine, or get some light bulbs with a better Color Rendering Index (CRI) The closer a rating is to 100, the easier it is to tell the colors apart.

Here is a link to a description of CRI:link text

Socks are certainly not all created equal - the vast majority is cheaply made with terrible seams, fabric that loses elasticity, etc.

The best underwear money can buy is the underwear you don't have to think about. I am a very satisfied user of ManPacks. It's a subscription service for underwear. Simply put down that you want a certain kind of sock or underwear, and they send you some every three months.

I started off with the 3 pack to standardize, but now I am down to the 1 pack. This means that as things wear out, you don't have to remember to shop and get new ones. Automating this part of your life is very rewarding.

I really don't have a problem with underwear wearing out or forgetting to buy more. Purchasing underwear when you need it is not difficult - there's absolutely no need to be on a subscription plan.

The Goldtoe Canterbury Midcalf

Comfortable, appropriate for dressy occasions, hold up very well over time. Of course, you'll look silly jogging in them.

Boxer briefs? Bleh.

The best underwear is no underwear!

Am I the only one?

What a pain in the ass it all is.

Just let your freak flag fly and get on with it.
