  • As part of my job, I manage multiple projects but I haven't been given any tools to organize those projects by my company. Is there a free (or cheap) solution to help organize and manage complex projects?

Are you looking for tools to manage your individual responsibilities within company projects, or for tools to enable a group to manage projects collectively? If its the former, a robust task managing app like Omnifocus might address your individual needs. If the latter, there's a wide range of web-based PM tools available that may be useful depending on the nature of your projects, functional needs and group size. Basic subscription packages are often free. Examples include Basecamp and Teambox but again, there are many other good ones out there depending on your needs. There's also software like MS Project which can also provide a lot of sophisticated PM features.

If you have the specific problem of trying to coordinate several disparate thread of activity that all have to happen for a project to be completed on time,l Engineers use something called a Gannt chart https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gannt_Chart for this. There are a few decent free / open source Gannt chart software tools out there e.g. http://www.ganttproject.biz/ , http://sourceforge.net/projects/openproj/ .

Cool tools really work.

A cool tool can be any book, gadget, software, video, map, hardware, material, or website that is tried and true. All reviews on this site are written by readers who have actually used the tool and others like it. Items can be either old or new as long as they are wonderful. We post things we like and ignore the rest. Suggestions for tools much better than what is recommended here are always wanted.
