  • I have an app from years ago for iphone called Starmap, it's pretty good, but I'm wondering if there is one designed for iPad that is better?

Star Walk is fantastic. It shows you what's in the sky in realtime (based on the compass and spacial orientation) and can show you any date in history as well. It also has multiple zoom levels and a night mode. I'm really impressed every time I use it.

In addition to your app, my favorite astronomy supplemental tool is a green laster pointer. Here: http://kk.org/cooltools/archives/001420.php It really does allow you to point to stars. One tip: if you have ocassion to go to China, pick one up there. You can get very powerful ones for $15.

Cool tools really work.

A cool tool can be any book, gadget, software, video, map, hardware, material, or website that is tried and true. All reviews on this site are written by readers who have actually used the tool and others like it. Items can be either old or new as long as they are wonderful. We post things we like and ignore the rest. Suggestions for tools much better than what is recommended here are always wanted.
