  • I'm new to working out.  What is a good gym workout drink?  My trainer suggests something with amino acids and I'd prefer something that is sugarless.  Thanks!

I know a lot of athletes are using chocolate milk as a recovery drink. If you don’t want sugar, you can make your own with aspartame or some other sweetener. Or you can just drink milk. Skim milk probably goes down easier.

But if you are new to working out, I am positive that simple water will work great (or at least, you won’t notice any difference.) It is also lower in calories, cheaper and easier to find (like in every bathroom.) If you want some electrolytes, there are many instant powders and tablets you can add to water. If you want amino acids, you can try drinking water and eating some nuts or cheese.

I like Vega shakes/smoothies. They’re high in protein and taste good despite having no added sugar. Their Sport line also has branched-chain amino acids (BCAAs). They have probiotics and – unlike whey or casein supplements – are plant-based (and therefore suitable for people who are lactose-intolerant, allergic to casein, or vegan), if those traits matter to you.

The Sport line is available in vanilla or chocolate. They have other lines (like the meal/snack replacement nutritional shakes) that are available in a wider variety of flavors but don’t necessarily have the BCAAs. Here’s their full product list; clicking anything on that page will take you to more information that category. Once you expand the Nutrition Facts section with the plus sign, you can choose a flavor directly under the Nutrition Facts heading.

I mainly use them as a breakfast, lunch, or snack replacement. I keep a tub (sometimes two, for flavor variety – mocha’s my favorite) of the nutrition shake ones at work and mix a scoop of powder with cold water in a battery-powered single-serving PROMiXX blender. The ones I drink are high in protein and fiber, so they’re surprisingly filling. They’re on my Amazon Subscribe & Save order; you can also find them at some brick-and-mortar stores, but the ones in my area are more expensive than Amazon.

My family has been making natural smoothies for years with good results. General guidelines:

  • Buy fresh fruit in season, wash, freeze.
  • When necessary, buy frozen fruit that is whole. The less processing the better.
  • Raw eggs are your natural protein friends!
  • Greens (kale or spinach)

Basic recipe:

  • Add fruit
    • Up to 2/3 of container
    • No more than 3 different fruits in one mix
  • Microwave for 45-seconds
  • Add greens
  • Add liquid (soy or almond milk, water)
  • Add 1-2 raw eggs
  • Blend
  • Drink

If you are concerned about raw eggs, rinse the outside of the shells with soap and water. Then crack the eggs and add to the mix.

Blend thoroughly and enjoy. All natural. No extra sugars.

For what it’s worth, we’ve been doing this about 15-years and have gone through many different blenders. My favorite for ease of use, power, and ease of clean up is the NutriBullet Original/600.
