I’ve hiked to glaciers in Tibet, all over Vietnam, and through parts of Nepal with my Chacos. They’re wonderful and wonderfully made, but boy are they heavy.

About a year ago I went looking for the equivalent of Chacos in rugged spirit, but with the weight of a flip-flop. I found them: they’re called Lunas.

Luna sandals are a design marvel — with soft, strong nylon straps (with little patches of leather where it counts) and Vibram soles. But they’re light. Originally inspired by the footwear of South American ultra long distance running tribes, Lunas are a fully modernized version of those sandals that look and feel great, are tough as nails, but weigh almost nothing.

I rarely travel without my Lunas — they’re so light and space efficient that they’re almost negligible to pack. But have since hiked up mountains in Banff and all over Japan with them. They’re my favorite piece of footwear I’ve found in the last ten years.

[42
