Long conversations<\/strong>
\nA \u201clong conversation\u201d is a new format for a conference. Two speakers begin a conversation on stage. After 15 minutes one of the two speakers is replaced by a new speaker and the conversation continues, and every 15 minutes for the next 8 hours a speaker is swapped out. (Each speaker converses for 30 minutes.) The day is engaging, unpredictable, passionate, diverse, informative, and entertaining. It\u2019s a format invented by Long Now Foundation that is worth stealing. For an example, here are highlights from a\u00a0long conversation held at the Smithsonian<\/a>. \u2014 KK<\/p>\n

Cheap alternative to Freewrite<\/strong>
\nI\u2019ve been coveting the\u00a0Freewrite typewriter<\/a>\u00a0since the Kickstarter launched a few years back, but I can\u2019t justify spending $500 on one. Thanks to\u00a0this blogpost<\/a>\u00a0I discovered that the now discontinued Alphasmart Neo2 is a cheap alternative. I found one\u00a0used on Amazon<\/a>\u00a0for $35 from a reputable seller who listed it in working condition and included the USB cord. I wasn\u2019t sure if a distraction-free typewriter would actually help me write more, but the answer is yes, it does! \u2014 CD<\/p>\n

Free file conversion<\/strong>
\nCloudConvert<\/a>\u00a0is a free conversion service that supports more than 200 file formats and you don\u2019t have to download any software to use it. I mostly use it to convert Google WebP files into JPEGS so that the images are usable in WordPress and Adobe products. \u2014 CD<\/p>\n

Bingeable British drama<\/strong>
\nEver since the last season of Downton Abbey wrapped up, I\u2019ve missed a good British historical drama. That itch has been satisfied by\u00a0The Crown<\/a>\u00a0(on Netflix) a lovely, beautifully casted and acted drama about the life of the still living Queen of England. The series begins in the 1940s and runs till today. Remarkably, it\u2019s far more entertaining than I would have thought. It has everything, including real drama, and actual history, and is more educational than most documentaries. With 20 episodes so far (and a 3rd season on the way), it is superbly bingeable. \u2014 KK<\/p>\n

No show, no slip socks<\/strong>
\nI\u2019ve tried a few different brands of low-cut \u201cno show\u201d socks and\u00a0these are the lowest and best<\/a>. They are super stretchy and they don\u2019t slip off. Seven pairs cost $15. \u2014 MF<\/p>\n

Download past Amazon purchases<\/strong>
\nAs a freelancer, I need to keep track of office supplies and other items that are tax deductible. I buy almost everything on Amazon, and I recently learned that\u00a0you can download your past purchases as spreadsheet files<\/a>. This is going to save me a lot of time because I can filter out things like food, clothing, toys, etc. \u2014 MF<\/p>\n
