Duck out of small talk<\/strong>
\n\u201cCross the street to avoid making aimless chitchat with random acquaintances.\u201d<\/p>\n

Make conversation meaningful<\/strong>
\n\u201cAsk your child for information in a gentle, nonjudgmental way, with specific, clear questions. Instead of \u2018How was your day?\u2019 try ‘What did you do in math class today\u2019 Instead of ‘Do you like your teacher?\u2019 ask ‘What do you like about your teacher?\u2019 Or ‘What do you not like so much?\u2019 Let her take her time to answer. Try to avoid asking, in the overly bright voice of parents everywhere, ‘Did you have fun in school today\u203d\u2019 She\u2019ll sense how important it is that the answer be yes.\u201d<\/p>\n

Don’t be a team player<\/strong>
\n\u201cMost inventors and engineers I\u2019ve met are like me\u2014they\u2019re shy and they live in their heads. They\u2019re almost like artists. In fact, the very best of them are artists. And artists work best alone where they can control an invention\u2019s design without a lot of other people designing it for marketing or some other committee. I don\u2019t believe anything really revolutionary has been invented by committee. If you\u2019re that rare engineer who\u2019s an inventor and also an artist, I\u2019m going to give you some advice that might be hard to take. That advice is: Work alone. You\u2019re going to be best able to design revolutionary products and features if you\u2019re working on your own. Not on a committee. Not on a team\u201d<\/p>\n

Become a temporary extrovert when it’s important<\/strong>
\n\u201cIntroverts are capable of acting like extroverts for the sake of work they consider important, people they love, or anything they value highly.\u201d<\/p>\n
