I first ran across this collection of short personal essays on an ex-girlfriend\u2019s book shelf, and I\u2019ve given away almost every copy I\u2019ve ever bought. Especially right now, with so much division and anger and stress and anxiety going around, Fulghum\u2019s ability to focus on the magic of everyday, banal human moments helps put life in focus. If you can, find a first edition in a used book store. The 25th anniversary edition is great, but there\u2019s something about the original that feels more \u201cpure\u201d to me.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/kk.org\/cooltools\/files\/2020\/12\/pro24-tuijian.png\" alt=\"pro24-tuijian\" width=\"500\" height=\"189\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-37556\" srcset=\"https:\/\/kk.org\/cooltools\/files\/2020\/12\/pro24-tuijian.png 500w, https:\/\/kk.org\/cooltools\/files\/2020\/12\/pro24-tuijian-300x113.png 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/www.xp-pen.com\/\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">XP Pen<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.huion.com\/\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Huion Graphics Tablets and Displays<\/a> (Price varies)<br \/>\nI could single out a few models, but that\u2019s not what makes these special to me. It\u2019s just the fact that these companies exist and are selling such fantastic products so cheap. It used to be Wacom was the only game in town, but for as little as $60 you can get a fantastic graphics pen tablet that\u2019s just as functional, and is an absolute game-changer for photo editing or digital art work. They\u2019re very popular in the art and design world, but it never ceases to amaze me that so few photographers even know they exist.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/kk.org\/cooltools\/files\/2020\/12\/iAwriter.png\" alt=\"iAwriter\" width=\"500\" height=\"384\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-37554\" srcset=\"https:\/\/kk.org\/cooltools\/files\/2020\/12\/iAwriter.png 500w, https:\/\/kk.org\/cooltools\/files\/2020\/12\/iAwriter-300x230.png 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/ia.net\/writer\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">iA Writer<\/a> ($30)<br \/>\nI spent years writing all of my articles \u201cin the CMS\u201d like an animal haha. To be honest, I sort of scoffed at the idea of using a dedicated writing program, but I switched over to iA Writer a few months ago and I\u2019m never going back. It\u2019s just so very simple and pared down; the whole point of the software is to help you to focus on what you\u2019re writing without worrying about fonts or formatting or anything else. You can even set it to dim everything but the sentence or paragraph you\u2019re working on. These days, I write everything in Markdown using iA Writer, and then export it as HTML or PDF or Word when I\u2019m done.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/kk.org\/cooltools\/files\/2020\/12\/Confocal-SP8-Stage-n_03-1uj60o1.jpg\" alt=\"Confocal-SP8-Stage-n_03-1uj60o1\" width=\"500\" height=\"499\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-37552\" srcset=\"https:\/\/kk.org\/cooltools\/files\/2020\/12\/Confocal-SP8-Stage-n_03-1uj60o1.jpg 500w, https:\/\/kk.org\/cooltools\/files\/2020\/12\/Confocal-SP8-Stage-n_03-1uj60o1-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/kk.org\/cooltools\/files\/2020\/12\/Confocal-SP8-Stage-n_03-1uj60o1-300x300.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/www.leica-microsystems.com\/products\/confocal-microscopes\/p\/leica-tcs-sp8\/\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Leica TCS SP8 confocal microscope<\/a><br \/>\nConfocal laser scanning microscopes like the SP8 are basically a combination of two techniques. Firstly, they use a narrow pinhole to cut out light that\u2019s out of focus, allowing you to capture multiple 2D slices and then stitch them together later to produce some really cool 3D renderings; secondly, they allow you to stimulate some sort of stain or fluorophore that you\u2019ve attached to your tissue by firing a laser at that tissue and then capturing the light that\u2019s emitted as a result. The images that come out of a confocal are otherworldly. Combinations of multiple, primary colors, with depth and clarity that\u2019s just incredible.
