Unlike with a lot of other vaporware digital nomad visas, Spain’s is for real, so if you’re interested in a hot seaside location or a historic city where a glass of wine will cost less than a soda, see more info here.

The Highest Tourism Tax in Europe

It’s up for debate which is the most expensive city in Europe to visit, but when it comes to tourist taxes, Amsterdam is ready to say, “We’re number one!” The city’s bed tax is going up to 12% in 2024 and cruise passengers will pay $11.50 per person. The city has been struggling with overtourism and has even run TV ads in the UK asking partying Brits not to come.

Come to Bali, Get Tracked by Neighbors

Speaking of places with way too many visitors, Bali is implementing a new phone app that harkens back to the communist days of ratting on your neighbors. The government is encouraging locals to report “bad behavior” from foreigners. Given Indonesia’s anti-gay atmosphere and a law we reported on earlier that technically bans sex outside of marriage, some travelers may want to steer clear for reasons beyond overtourism, horrible traffic, and garbage.

Avoiding Rental Car Liability Insurance Hassles

There are several countries popular with tourists where, by law, you have to have local liability insurance, which isn’t covered by your credit card or regular auto insurance. In order to avoid getting scammed or paying exorbitant rates, look for companies that include this insurance in their rates and clearly state that in writing in the booking.
