The best of these are still valid and useful, so we\u2019re trying out something new \u2014&nbsp;<strong>Retro Recomendo<\/strong>. Once every 6 weeks, we\u2019ll send out a throwback issue of evergreen recommendations focused on one theme from the past 7 years.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3><strong>Teflon frying pan alternative<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>A surprisingly workable alternative to a Teflon frying pan is a ceramic coated pan. We use a&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/geni.us\/Yr5HA\">GreenPan<\/a>&nbsp;(it\u2019s actually white ceramic inside) that unsticks as well as old Teflon. The cheap Teflon pans we use only last about 4 years. Our GreenPan is 5 years old and shows no wear. The 10 inch GreenPan is $25. \u2014 KK<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3><strong>Small deep fryer<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>I don\u2019t deep fry food every day, but when I\u2019m in the mood for some sweet potatoes fried in coconut or avocado oil, I am glad I have this $35&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/geni.us\/gKkyin\">Fry Daddy deep fryer<\/a>. It\u2019s small so it doesn\u2019t need a lot of oil and it heats up quickly. I keep the oil in the fryer and put the lid on once it has cooled down and use the same oil the next time I use it. \u2014 MF<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3><strong>Soft butter anytime<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Hands-down my favorite purchase this year was this&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/geni.us\/un3Cp7\">$15 butter crock<\/a>. It feels like a luxury to always have soft butter available. It works better in cooler climates. I keep mine on the kitchen island away from the stove area and add an ice cube to the water every few days. \u2014 CD<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3><strong>Large apple slicer<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>We eat apples often enough that an apple slicer wins a spot in our kitchen. A good one will core and carve an apple into 8 to 12 slices in one swift motion. There are lots of brands, like OXO\u2019s, that are good enough, but they can\u2019t deal with the largest apples. The apple piecer you want is a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/geni.us\/OO2BZT1\">Newness stainless steel<\/a> (out-of-stock, <a href=\"https:\/\/geni.us\/3aWkd3\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">similar one<\/a>)\u00a0one with a 4-inch diameter that is heavy duty enough to slice all apples (and pears and onions) forever. \u2014 KK<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3><strong>Ground beef chopper<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>This&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/geni.us\/SmQBrnm\">OXO Good Grips Ground Meat Chopper<\/a>&nbsp;($12) quickly breaks up hamburger meat when making tacos or pasta sauce. Just chop away with the three fins until the ground beef is the way you like it. \u2014 MF<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3><strong>How to load a dishwasher properly<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Finally, a definitive \u201cHow-to\u201d on how to load the dishwasher.&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.consumerreports.org\/dishwashers\/how-to-load-a-dishwasher\/?utm_campaign=Recomendo&amp;utm_medium=email&amp;utm_source=Revue%20newsletter\">Consumer Reports shared an interactive graphic and a video<\/a>&nbsp;on the best method for most machines. I was surprised to find that dishes and pots with baked on food&nbsp;<em>can<\/em>&nbsp;be placed faced down toward the spray arm.
