I came to the Grateful Dead late by some standards, and left its orbit early by most. My first album was the band\u2019s third, \u201cAoxomoxoa,\u201d which I purchased shortly after its release in 1969, and I didn\u2019t experience the Dead live until 1970. From then until 1973, I saw them a lot, mostly at Winterland in San Francisco, but by 1974, with a few memorable exceptions, I was pretty much done.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

My blind spot then, is the bulk of the band\u2019s 30-year career, which also happens to be the years when the Grateful Dead was at its most famous and popular, becoming one of the highest-grossing arena and stadium acts of its day. That\u2019s probably why Alive With the Dead: A Fly on the Wall With a Camera<\/em>, by photographer Susana Millman, seems like such a revelation to a fallen Dead Head like me. Oh sure, Millman gives us plenty of shots of the hoopla surrounding the 1987 release of \u201cIn the Dark,\u201d which went double platinum, but her photographs also offer intimate peeks inside a scene I\u2019d always dismissed as being too big for its own good.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And in many ways, it certainly was, as Millman\u2019s photos of the tie-dye-clad crowds filling enormous venues like Soldier Field in Chicago might have argued in the hands of a different author and photographer. Soldier Field, of course, is where the Dead performed its last show on July 9, 1995 \u2014 lead guitarist Jerry Garcia would die one month later. But instead of using the pages of her book to caution readers against simultaneous addictions to heroin, cigarettes, and Ben & Jerry\u2019s, Millman gives us a glorious double-printed, double-exposed photograph of the band on stage at its last gig, dwarfed by the adoration of its fans, stage lights, and fireworks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Elsewhere, Millman shares a sweet recollection of Garcia on her wedding day, during which he confesses his nervousness at having to walk Millman down the aisle to give her away to Dennis McNally, the band\u2019s publicist and biographer at the time. This and other human anecdotes \u2014 some fleshed out with text, some left alone as photos \u2014 give Alive With the Dead<\/em> the feeling of a well-thumbed family album rather than a precious tome about rock stars. It\u2019s good to know that from Millman\u2019s fly-on-the-wall perspective, the members of a band I once loved didn\u2019t let the fame I missed go entirely to their heads.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What do your brain, your heart, and your uterus think when their expectations of you are too high? Adulthood is a Myth<\/em> explores these questions and more in over 100 comic strips.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Writer and artist Sarah Anderson compiled the best of her work from the online \u201cSarah\u2019s Scribbles\u201d collection and created plenty more comic strips to explain the insecurities and set back introverts face as they come into adulthood. These crisp black-and-white comic strips cover stressful situations like trying on clothes, being in crowds of people, obsessing over your flaws, and making the inevitable but always ill-advised comparisons to people who have figured out more than you have. Other comic strips show the unnamed main character having fun with her body fat, embracing her imperfections, and finding pleasure in little things like lying on warm laundry, wearing men\u2019s hoodies, and embracing holiday costumes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If the title doesn\u2019t make you want to pick it up, the fuzzy sweater on the cover might convince you. Read it all in one sitting or start wherever you\u2019d like as you linger over the expressive drawings, wonder about the talking rabbit, and generally relax with the knowledge that the things that made you think you were weird and alone are universal among introverts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
