{"id":2632,"date":"2008-02-11T12:26:53","date_gmt":"2008-02-11T06:27:40","guid":{"rendered":""},"modified":"2011-07-08T20:36:55","modified_gmt":"2011-07-08T14:36:55","slug":"an-eternal-last-goodbye","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/kk.org\/ct2\/an-eternal-last-goodbye\/","title":{"rendered":"An Eternal Last Goodbye"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>\nVia Jad Abumrad, host of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.wnyc.org\/shows\/radiolab\/episodes\/2008\/01\/29\">RadioLab<\/a>, I came across a 18-minute loop of music commissioned by a very enlightend <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/radio4\/science\/lastgoodbye.shtml\">hospital morgue<\/a> near Paris.&#160; The composer&#8217;s assignment was: &#8220;Please write us a song that will allow family members to face the death of a loved one.&#8221;&#160; The morgue wanted music for the bereaved that did not pump up emotional grief, but instead elevated the eternal aspect of all things.&#160; Help slow the living down, to take the long view.\n<\/p>\n<p>\nThe resulting musical piece (Salles de Departs by <a href=\"http:\/\/www.emusic.com\/artist\/David-Lang-MP3-Download\/11584903.html\">David Lang<\/a>) is lovely, with an ethereal but not too alien spirit. And the architecture of the place is cool.&#160; It feels like the morgue has been there 10,000 years, has always been there, and will always be there.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/kk.org\/ct2\/morgue1.jpg\" height=\"244\" width=\"320\" border=\"0\" align=\"middle\" hspace=\"4\" vspace=\"4\" alt=\"Morgue1\" \/>\n<\/p>\n<p>\nBoth the music and the design provokes you to think outside of time, which I what I hope our <a href=\"http:\/\/www.longnow.org\/projects\/clock\/\">10,000-year Clock<\/a> does.&#160;\n<\/p>\n<p>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/kk.org\/ct2\/morgue3.jpg\" height=\"244\" width=\"320\" border=\"0\" align=\"middle\" hspace=\"4\" vspace=\"4\" alt=\"Morgue3\" \/>\n<\/p>\n<p>\nSecond thought: Seems like folks have gone nuts in outdoing each other in creative weddings? Wait till you see their funerals. Boring off-the-shelf traditional funerals are becoming as passe as traditional cookie-cutter birthday parties, graduations and weddings. These life-passage events are now opportunities for showing off your individuality. What bigger life passage is there than death?
