The topic was eReader devices and apps and their unique code rendering issues. These are some gems worth remembering:<\/p>\n<p><strong>Misc<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/twitter.com\/#!\/amarie\">@amarie<\/a> &#8211; uses TweetChat to focus on conversations with a certain hashtag<\/p>\n<p><strong>Rendering Issues<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/twitter.com\/#!\/MatthewDiener\">@MatthewDiener<\/a> &#8211; &#8220;for Kindle\/Mobi, @jtallent&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/kindleformatting.com\/\">Kindle Formatting<\/a> points out most of the rendering issues&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/twitter.com\/#!\/BookDesignGirl\">@BookDesignGirl<\/a> &#8211; &#8220;Edges of the images in my .jpg&#8217;s were blurry and the [epub] spec said to change to .gif it that was happening. It did the trick.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/twitter.com\/#!\/BookDesignGirl\">@ BookDesignGirl<\/a> &#8211; &#8220;Tally: @camilcloutier uses center tags @NickRuffilo uses CSS not center tags &#038; I&#8217;ve used empty span tags to make text center on iBooks!&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/twitter.com\/#!\/pablod\">@pablod<\/a> &#8211; Previews HTML components of an ePub file in Mobile Safari in the iOS emulator. Note: only good for previewing single pages (not full epub docs) &#8211; not a substitute for previewing on an actual iOS device, but in a pinch, it can help.<\/p>\n<p><strong>On embedding fonts<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/twitter.com\/#!\/BookDesignGirl\">@ BookDesignGirl<\/a> &#8211; &#8220;I&#8217;ve started embedding fonts. Used <a href=\"http:\/\/tinyurl.com\/6cw5hoz\">http:\/\/tinyurl.com\/6cw5hoz<\/a> for current project &#038; it worked fine (knock on wood).&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/twitter.com\/#!\/pablod\">@pablod<\/a> &#8211; &#8220;I had to pull out a div with embedded fonts which was causing a rendering issue at page break for a UL within the div in iBooks.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/twitter.com\/#!\/tinahender\">@tinahender<\/a> &#8211; &#8220;As a a rule, I do not embed fonts b\/c licensing issues are not clear. But if a client asked, I would look into it further.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/twitter.com\/#!\/pablod\">@pablod<\/a> &#8211; &#8220;Alternately, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.google.com\/webfonts\">Google.com\/webfonts<\/a> gets around the pesky font licensing issue. Also, <a href=\"http:\/\/theleagueofmoveabletype.com\/\">theleagueofmoveabletype.com<\/a>&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/twitter.com\/#!\/biladew\">@biladew<\/a> &#8211; &#8220;embed fonts only when necessary. Otherwise generic font faces should give you what you need (serif, sans-serif, etc)&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/twitter.com\/#!\/BookDesignGirl\">@BookDesignGirl<\/a> &#8211; &#8220;We don&#8217;t embed b\/c of licensing\/potential validation issues but did for this project. Times font didn&#8217;t work for tweens&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/twitter.com\/#!\/aarontroia\">@aarontroia<\/a> &#8211; &#8220;go to @ebookarchitects <a href=\"bit.ly\/lDSNWv\">bit.ly\/lDSNWv<\/a> and download Font Test, its a really good font embedding example&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><strong>On InDesign-based workflows and conversion tools<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/twitter.com\/#!\/MatthewDiener\">@MatthewDiener<\/a> &#8211; &#8220;ID=>Aptara=>ePUB=>Kindle so far&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/twitter.com\/#!\/BookDesignGirl\">@BookDesignGirl<\/a> &#8211; &#8220;We do InDesign to ePub (either conversion house or in-house) -> edit ePub -> convert to .mobi -> note conversion issues -> go back to epub and edit in Dreamweaver -> .mobi (repeat)&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/twitter.com\/#!\/TonyRobertsMN\">@TonyRobertsMN<\/a> &#8211; &#8220;Yes, export to ePUB then modify. Nothing Indesign produces on it&#8217;s own satisfies me. I edit the HTML manually, then make the .mobi&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/twitter.com\/#!\/JenniferOmner\">@JenniferOmner<\/a> &#8211; &#8220;epub -> .mobi -> note conversion issues -> back to epub file for Mobi &#038; edit in Oxyen -> .mobi&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/twitter.com\/#!\/markerrett\">@markerrett<\/a> &#8211; &#8220;I did InD to ePub then use Calibre to .mobi it&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/twitter.com\/#!\/BookDesignGirl\">@BookDesignGirl<\/a> &#8211; &#8220;I convert my epubs with Kindle Previewer.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><strong>On KindleGen<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/twitter.com\/#!\/aarontroia\">@aarontroia<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/twitter.com\/#!\/jtallent\">@jtallent<\/a> &#8211; both recommend <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/feature.html?ie=UTF8&#038;docId=1000234621\">KindleGen<\/a> over Calibre or Sigil<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/twitter.com\/#!\/jtallent\">@jtallent<\/a> &#8211; &#8220;easy to do in command line. &#8220;path_to_kindlegen.exe path_to_opf&#8221;&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/twitter.com\/#!\/MatthewDiener\">@MatthewDiener<\/a> &#8211; &#8220;Once you figure out how to use it from command line\/Terminal it is an easy tool, and edit\/rerender simple&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/twitter.com\/#!\/MatthewDiener\">@MatthewDiener<\/a> &#8211; &#8220;If you need help with KindleGen, instructions on using it are included in this document. <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/opHs8W\">http:\/\/bit.ly\/opHs8W<\/a>&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/twitter.com\/#!\/BookDesignGirl\">@BookDesignGirl<\/a> &#8211; &#8220;I assumed that KindlePreviewer uses KindleGen. And then you have the preview right there.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Zip tips<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/twitter.com\/#!\/tinahender\">@tinahender<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/twitter.com\/#!\/aarontroia\">@aarontroia<\/a>, and <a href=\"http:\/\/twitter.com\/#!\/PenguinPowered\">@PenguinPowered<\/a> &#8211; all recommend @danrodneytweets&#8217;s epub <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mobileread.com\/forums\/showpost.php?p=1183274&#038;postcount=19\">zip and unzip scripts<\/a> (also <a href=\"http:\/\/j.mp\/n8zkK9\">here<\/a>)<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/twitter.com\/#!\/markerrett\">@markerrett<\/a> &#8211; &#8220;Plus BBEdit now lets you open HTML inside the ePub with the need to Unzip then zip again.&#8221;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>This week&#8217;s #eprdctn hour, moderated by @BookDesignGirl, just concluded.
