Street Use

Poles As Billboards

Telephone poles are supposed to hold up electrical wires, except when they serve as ad hoc billboards. I found this one telephone pole in my hometown of Pacifica, California which could be seen dead-on as you drove down a street ending in a “T”. The pole has been covered by so many bills, posters, and sheets of papers nailed in over the years that it now has a sign ironically prohibiting its use as a sign post.

One reason the companies responsible for erecting & maintaining these poles prohibit stapling, nailing, etc. has been that when workers need to climb up or down by using boot-jack spikes,
the presence of all this unyielding surface debris makes their jobs and lives that much more dangerous. It’s a common enough practice that it gets routinely ignored. But as someone who had had to scale and descend power & telephone poles, I can attest to the difficulty such garbage creates.
