Forget calculating car lengths. The safe following distance for a car is 2 seconds behind the vehicle in front of you (assuming dry pavement.) Figure from the time that the back of the car ahead passes a shadow or crack on the road to the time the front of your car reaches it. This rule is self-adjusting for speed. – Tom Parker, Editor, Lansing, New York, USA
