• Looking for a dandelion weeder with a long D-handle.

  • We have goats, sheep and ponies, so battling weeds with chemicals is a last resort for large patches of noxious plants. For spot killing of weeds, I prefer physical removal. I have a cutting hoe that easily slices through just about anything, but it's large, heavy and sharp, so it's a wee bit dangerous, especially when a curious pony wants to see what you're doing. I also have a long-handled dandelion weeder. Since it has a small, sharp blade and I push it down into the ground, it's safe to use even around the most curious livestock, but the straight handle doesn't allow me to comfortably apply enough force to cut through tough weeds like thistle or buffalo bur.

Does anyone make a dandelion weeder-type tool with a D-handle like you find on some shovels? Or a good, sturdy D-handle that I could attach to my existing tool?

I have a dandelion ”popper” made by Fiskars that I highly recommend. Fiskars Uproot Weed and Root Remover.

See the Cool Tools review of the ”Weed Hound” (pushed in by foot) at http://kk.org/cooltools/weed-hound-dand/

See my comment there: the item is no longer available from Amazon, but from All Garden Tools for $30, at http://buyallgardentools.com/product/hound-dog-products-hdp1-6-weed-hound/

Cool tools really work.

A cool tool can be any book, gadget, software, video, map, hardware, material, or website that is tried and true. All reviews on this site are written by readers who have actually used the tool and others like it. Items can be either old or new as long as they are wonderful. We post things we like and ignore the rest. Suggestions for tools much better than what is recommended here are always wanted.
