Wiss 1DS Industrial Shears

Do-pretty-much everything shears

Apparently I’ve developed a bit of a scissors appreciation fetish, and this pair is, I think, the ideal, do-pretty-much everything model.

You know how, when picking up “modern” scissors you can easily wonder if they’re up to the job you have for them? Not these, just the opposite feeling — you know you’ve got a proper, real damn tool in your hand. They’re 8″ (~20cm) long, heavy forged nickel-plated carbon steel. The blades are fairly thick & heavy, no flexing or bending going on and ideal to cut anything. There’s enough steel there to take lots of sharpening over their (many decade) lifetime. The center pivot is adjustable but the screw (“Patented SET-EASY® pivot”) certainly stays where it’s put, so there’s zero unplanned loosening.

In this 8″ scissor that pivot point is 4.75″ away from the handle end, meaning that there’s a lot of leverage available to the 3″ blades. Man-hands will not break these things, either. The pair we have is several years old with a bit of the nickel off the pointy end of one blade. These things will last many years still. Other than maybe hammering them closed over something inappropriate or simply leaving them out in the rain for months, I can’t imagine these things ever being damaged or inadequate for any task I’d set them to. (Our pair is a 1DS, the newer model is a 1DSN; I think the loop handle is a little bigger and takes the thing to 8.5″.)
