Monkey Tool/Bali Fake-outs/Digital Nomad Bargains
Nomadico issue #143
TSA-friendly Monkey Tool
I mentioned the handy and thin Monkey Tool before but that was back in 2022 so I’m bringing it up again. Dozens of trips later, I still haven’t run into any problems with bringing this flat steel multi-tool through security. Twice someone has pulled the credit-card-sized tool out and inspected it, but there are no sharp edges: just functions like a screwdriver, bottle opener, and wrench with multiple sizes. It’s no Swiss Army Knife or Leatherman, but those require a checked bag to travel with you on a flight.
Bali: Instagram vs. Reality
Ask a dozen experienced globetrotters which destination they think is overhyped and disappointing and there’s a good chance at least a third of them will say “Bali” without even stopping to think. It’s a great example of a place where what you see on Instagram has almost no connection to the in-person reality. Here’s a great rundown from someone who learned the hard way after flying there for a big birthday celebration.
Travel Trends for the Year
If all the chaos and hate in the news is wearing you out, maybe you need a “calmcation,” a dose of “noctourism,” or a nostalgic adult summer camp. Those all come up in this BBC round-up of the seven travel trends that will define 2025. They pulled from multiple predictions and sources to compile it. Two developments are signs of a warming planet: “coolcations” are in and the safari season is shifting in Africa because of climate change.
Bargain Places for Digital Nomads
You can perform a search for the best digital nomad destinations around the world and get pages of articles written by desk-bound editors who haven’t set foot in half of them. ChapGPT will use that source material to give you a list that’s even more questionable. Because of all the variables and different priorities among remote workers, it’s hard to generalize about what will work for you (or anyone else). So this article of mine only focuses on which countries cover the necessities well but have a cost of living that is half or less what you would spend in the USA, Canada, UK, or Australia. The Best Digital Nomad Destinations for Those on a Budget.
