PHYSICAL
- Draplin Design Company “Stuff Sheeth”– As a poet I like to have a little notebook with me all the time, but I found that just stuffing my Field Notes into the main pocket of my fanny pack (below) caused WAY more wear and tear, and also my favorite pen (a uniball Vision Elite) clips right inside. Now I have a little all-in-one writing kit that also can hold stickers, etc.
- Custom Fanny Pack from Hartford Gear Company – During 2020 I had a heck of a time leaving my house without masks, wallet, keys, etc. My purse was too bulky to keep everything in, but this fanny pack was perfect for keeping me from freaking out. I got it made in a slightly bigger size so a kindle could fit inside…though that is not as necessary because of…(below)
- Boox Palma – The E-Reader of my dreams! small form factor, well made, painful enough to not work as a phone but amazing as a place to access my libby account, kindle books, and my RSS reader of choice. It works as a reader, and is more user friendly and versatile than a kindle.
DIGITAL
- Obsidian – I use the Obsidian app as my common place book. It speaks to Readwise, so all of my highlights from books get added automatically. I also send notes I make for work and poems here. There’s an amazing feature called Open Random Note that I use when I don’t have an idea for a poem. Let’s click it for an example: ‘A person must dream a long time in order to act with grandeur, and dreaming is nursed in darkness.’ — Jean Genet. That’s a great jumping off point for a poem.
- LibreOffice – I have 35 years of poems saved, and LibreOffice can open them all. When you’ve been writing for years, your manuscript formats will often be obsolete (though I’ve tried to make decisions that make my poems available platform agnostic, such as using plaintext, but line breaks and stanza breaks don’t always translate well in markdown). LibreOffice is an incredible tool for opening 25 year old wordperfect files when I need them.

Having a Practice
A writer is not so much someone who has something to say as he is someone who has found a process that will bring about new things he would not have thought of if he had not started to say them. That is, he does not draw on a reservoir; instead, he engages in an activity that brings to him a whole succession of unforeseen stories, poems, essays, plays, laws, philosophies, religions, or—but wait!
