Tips from three books about control

Book Freak is the third newsletter from Cool Tools Lab (our other two are the Cool Tools Newsletter and Recomendo). In each weekly issue, we offer three short pieces of advice from books. Here’s the advice from our third issue.

Focus on what you can control
“Under our control are our thoughts and actions. Not under our control is everything else, including fame, power, the behaviour and thoughts of other people, our property and our reputation.” – Happy, by Derren Brown (2018)

The present is all you’ve got
“…realize that you can’t control everything in your life, cultivating a sense of surrender to the present moment as opposed to time traveling to your regrets from the past and your fears of the future.” – Choose Yourself, by James Altucher (2013)

Decrease your inflows, increase your outflows
“As you control the inflow, increase the outflow to rid yourself of things that only serve to make your life more awkward and overstuffed.” – Discardia, by Dinah Sanders (2011)
