Not a Nomad Role Model

If Jason Bourne went to the dark side and he was Korean, he might look like Do Kwon, who was arrested in Montenegro last week while trying to board a flight to Dubai. The crypto entrepreneur, whose stablecoins have lost some $40 billion, was traveling under a false name and carrying “forged Costa Rican passports and a separate set of Belgian passports.” I’m guessing he paid for the plane tickets with real cash…

Bad Brits Abroad

We’ve seen several tourism boards toy with ads asking people not to visit a certain place, but Amsterdam’s new campaign takes it a step further, telling young and rowdy British tourists that they are not welcome. “The online ads, highlighting the risks associated with the excessive use of drugs and booze, will be triggered when people in Britain tap in terms like stag party, cheap hotel or pub crawl Amsterdam.” See the full story here.

Turkish Lira Still Declining

We noted at the end of the year that the Turkish lira declined more than almost any other currency in 2022 and the trend has slowed but is still ugly: it hit a new low of 19 to the dollar this month. This time just two years ago it was 8 to the dollar. You might not see this reflected in items priced in foreign currency, like hotels and flights, but this certainly gives you plenty of buying power on the ground as a traveler. I’ll be on a couple of the country’s islands briefly after elections in May, which will determine if the country stays on the same path that got them here. Stay tuned…

Looking Beyond Airbnb

While Airbnb can be great for a short-term rental, there are often better options if you’re going to stick around for a month or longer. I’ve used a few of these myself, but check out this comprehensive article from fellow nomad writer Nora Dunn on how to book monthly nomad accommodation.
