I am an avid knitter and crocheter and have been for countless years. The traditional way of purchasing yarn and accessories is by going to a local yarn store. In the Internet age a multitude of online stores sprung up offering yarn from large companies and from individual spinners and dyers – a crafter’s delight.
In the last few years, the idea of curated boxes has grown and of course some enterprising souls have sought to include crafters in this market. I have tried three such services and by far I find Knitcrate is the best.
Each month the crate is delivered to your door in a shiny red bubble wrap envelope. I look forward to seeing it in my mail box – it is like Christmas and my birthday rolled into one shiny package each month. Subscriptions are available both in the US and abroad. You get yarn, a pattern, a fun extra and a soothing extra. The yarn is always enough to complete the project suggested and quite often features some exotic fibre such as cashmere or silk. The patterns are suited to your level. There are also videos that explain new stitches or techniques. They offer a number of types of subscription – Socks, Intermediate/Advanced, Indie (independent dyers) and a Newbie subscription for total beginners.
The fun extra is usually a tool or an extra book of patterns. The soothing extra can be anything from cookies and candy to handmade soap. The yarn and the extras come in an organza bag with Knitcrate ribbon – a nice touch to keep your project in.
Knitcrate also has an online store where you can buy knitting accessories, patterns and of course yarn, many dyed especially for Knitcrate, and all at reasonable prices.
If you are a knitter I would highly recommend trying Knitcrate. If you know someone who knits or wants to learn you’d be hard pressed to find a better gift.
