Settlers vs. Nomads

We’ve been enjoying the 4-part series from fellow Substackers Lauren Razavi (full disclosure, an advertiser via Plumia) and Marko Ayling titled “Global Gentrification–Are Digital Nomads Ruining Everything?” Part 3 highlighted a much-needed distinction and how that impacts the response to digital nomad visas. Sure, some people are “settlers” on a path to residency, but others are true nomads who have no intention of sticking around. Read the full post here.

Countries Full of Rich People

If you’re looking to live it up more by moving abroad or to extend your runway for a start-up, you may want to avoid Luxembourg, Ireland, Switzerland, Qatar, and Norway. When ranked by per-capita GDP, those are now at the top of the list of the richest countries in the world. Many of you readers are from a place not far behind though: the USA is #7, Australia #9, and Canada #12.

Improving U.S. Airports

Despite the USA’s relative wealth, most visitors landing at our major airport hubs could be forgiven for thinking we’re close to broke. Some of the terminals have been getting much more pleasant lately though and recently passed infrastructure spending will finally get some of the busiest airports into the modern age. See the full story here: America’s airports are suddenly pretty good now.

Life After “Influencing”

The one slice of the digital nomad spectrum that probably gets the most visibility and press attention is the “influencers” subset. These are the high-follower-count personalities on platforms like Instagram and TikTok that are constantly plugging products and services to get paid. As this recent NYT article that is full of tragedy, comedy, and drama points out though, it’s a crash-and-burn path with a career span about as long as that of an NFL football player. And the aftermath is as tough to adjust to. “If social media has made audiences anxious, it’s driving creators to the brink.”
