The Happiest Expat Destination

Once people have left their birth country and moved abroad, how happy are they in their new destination? If that country is my base of Mexico, quite happy it turns out. Mexico again topped the InterNations Survey this year, with an impressive 90% of expats saying they’re happy with their decision to relocate. The country ranked #1 or #2 among the 53 nations in “ease of settling in,” “personal finance,” “local friendliness,” and the ease of making friends. In general, those who relocated feel welcomed and happy, especially compared to the people in the five ranked at the bottom of the list: Germany, South Korea, Turkey, Norway, and Kuwait. A Year’s Worth of Nomad Events

If you want to mix it up with other location-independent workers from around the world, you’ve got plenty of options in the coming year. Our Bulgarian buddy Maria put together this list of 21 upcoming conferences and meetups over the next 12 months (scroll down the page for all the details), plus we’ll add Camp Indie in Connecticut, which met its deposits minimum to move ahead in summer of 2024.

Keeping Track of Your Schengen Limit

If you’re not an EU passport holder, you’ve got a 90-day limit cumulative within 180 days before you have to leave the zone for at least three months. I’m cutting it close on this trip based on my mental calculations, so I probably should have used an app to keep track. I hear good things about the Schengen Simple app, but it leaves out 50% of the U.S. market by being IOS-only. None of the similar Android-ready apps have many reviews, but most are free so they’re worth a try to avoid tracking on a spreadsheet.

Cool Off on the Slopes

In case you haven’t noticed, this planet is setting new heat records this summer in the northern hemisphere and it’s only going to get worse. It might be time to fill an empty plane seat to Argentina or Chile and pop on a pair of skis: the snow is now dumping on the Andes and ski season is on in South America. Here are the 9 best ski resorts in South America to consider. (Full nepotism disclosure: you’ll see my daughter’s byline on that article, but that’s better than sending you to a bot-written one, right?)
