Travel Trends for 2024

I’ve read quite a few travel trends predictions in the past month that have made me roll my eyes, but this round-up from Conde Nast Traveler has plenty of depth and some real research behind the new buzzwords. I’m not convinced that people are going to increase their vacation time heading to cold climates and there’s nothing new about “plans-free travel” for any of us who started out as backpackers. But I do agree that we’ll be seeing a lot more home-swapping, sustainability transparency, government-funded urban gardens, and new upscale train trips (with better stations) soon.

Mental Map Mistakes

We all have wrong ideas in our heads about geography. Sometimes it’s due to badly presented maps, more often due to our brains’ desires to simplify and classify directions. This Atlas Obscura map surprises article has plenty of listings that would probably win you a bar bet against most people. A few: 1) 60% of Canadians live south of Seattle. 2) The southernmost point of Canada is at a similar latitude to Barcelona and Rome. 3) Atlanta is west of Detroit. 4) New York City is further west than Santiago, Chile.

Portable Hanging File Organizer

Does your job require using and organizing physical papers still? If so, you can easily pack up your docs, travel with them, and then have the same hanging file system wherever you roam. This cascading wall file organizer folds down to a thin folio when you travel, but opens up to a system with six pockets of different colors.

Worldschooling the Kids

I’ve got a daughter who spent three years going to school in Mexico (in Spanish) and I think she’s a better person for it, but a local school that’s suitable isn’t always available to expats and nomads. If you’re a traveling parent wondering what your options are, check out this comprehensive article about “Worldschooling” from our buddy Nora at The Professional Hobo, with organizations to connect with and specific programs in different countries.
